A Danish shipping company asked us to improve their appraisal methods. In this case each and every criteria was defined and detailed according to differing levels of performance.

The performance levels were then labeled and categorised to reflect a combination of competence and drive.

The effect was that the whole organisation became more engaged on the positive aspects of the process and that the evaluations made became so much more constructive in terms of supporting crew in their efforts of developing skills.
