Talking about performance, LTIF, safety culture and development of our people, the human element plays a vital role. But we are constantly challenged in dealing with it because it cannot be ‘boxed in’ as a constant that is easily controllable.

If you have been part of one or more of the Human Factor Champion courses you have become acquainted with various issue pertaining to the human element. To become a true Human Factor Champion will take continuous effort to find ways to convert our knowledge into practice, especially since the maritime industry to a large extent relies on procedures and top-down hierarchies. This course sums up on some of the issues we have touched upon in the previous courses and gives the participants a chance to discuss and exchange experiences about how we work with the human element in a constructive way.

We have identified three areas that seem to be occupying and challenging us:

  1. When it comes to human performance we are all looking for ‘The Answer’. But how close can we get to ‘the silver bullet’?
  2. As a performance resource humans are often described as a liability, but is this the way we should see it?
  3. As ‘office workers’ we are trying to do our best to come up with solutions that can help improve human performance. But should we focus on telling people what to do or help them develop their ability to assess, discuss and develop performance?

These topics will be our point of departure. This module will give you chances to discuss dilemmas and ask more questions about the Human Factor.

The workshop will be facilitated by Erik Green.
