Improving leadership competencies

DNV GL found it interesting that we have a well-considered plan for our continued safety improvement efforts, including our safety leadership training and that we have included our safety mindset in our staff induction.
Erik Mohn - Head of Crewing at Seatrans

“They appreciate the continuity of our efforts. A major advantage is that the leadership training and appraisal process are actively incorporating the assessment issues brought forward. According to the DNV GL we have come a long way and we are leading the way within the industry.

There is no doubt that middle management including the superintendents have been ‘moved’ safety-wise – it is extremely important to have their buy-in and that they can take this further.”

It’s not about driving cars. It’s not about any kind of stand-up comedy performance. It’s about how to improve the results of an organisation as a whole. The aim of the new Seatrans Leadership Concept is to achieve better results in every respect. It is a question of how to drive the performance to new heights – on shore and on board.
Atle Sommer - Managing Director at Seatrans Ship Management

Situation

The management of Seatrans wanted to help leaders at sea and on shore to improve their leadership skills and to establish a common standard throughout the organisation.

Solution

The first step was to create a Seatrans Leadership Philosophy in close liaison with the Managing Director and Head of Crewing and HR. On the basis of this philosophy an extensive 5-day process oriented leadership course was developed for superintendents ashore and top-3 officers on board. By means of the NOTECHS (non-technical skills) system to assess pilots’ CRM skills an appraisal scheme with leadership behavioural definitions was developed to be used by all leaders in the organisation.

Benefits and results

All participants received a Leadership Handbook which comprised a summary of the philosophy, behavioural definitions, leadership tools and appraisal form and procedure. Moreover, a template tool was developed with the objective of making the appraisal process more fair and objective. The template contained a clear definition and description of Seatrans’ leadership behaviour and attitudes categorised as “critical”, “compliance” and “excellent”.
